On this fourth of July, I’d like to announce the winner of this year’s My Favorite American award. The winner is Terri Gross. Both of her, the voice you hear on the radio asking the smart and humane questions and the pixie across the desk from Stephen Colbert. How she’d want to wring my neck for calling her a pixie. She once gave a tongue lashing to the waiter who asked what the “young lady” was having. And apologized later, explaining to the kid why it was offensive, and the kid listened. That voice, who doesn’t?
Colbert: “You do something in your interviews that I don’t understand. You let the guests talk. WHY?”
Congratulations, Terri Gross.
